Jolly Laha

Ms. Jolly Laha is a senior play therapist and psychotherapist in Kolkata with 25+ years of experience, specializing in child-centered play therapy. She runs her own institute, provides therapy for children, adults, and couples, conducts trainings in India and Nepal, and works with various NGOs while focusing on family and youth empowerment.

Chiranjeet Chatterjee

Chiranjeet Chatterjee is an environmental leader with ~20 years of experience, leading climate, conservation, and community programs at SAFE. He integrates environmental psychology to support resilience and well-being in vulnerable communities, and contributes to sustainability-focused initiatives, policy work, and holistic care as an advisor at Merak Institute.

Our Team

Sreeja Sethia

Sreeja Sethia is a psychologist and psychotherapist with extensive experience across mental health practice and the social development sector. As Director at Merak Institute, she brings a strong commitment to creating accessible, ethical, and impact-driven mental health services.

She has worked extensively in child protection, serving as Program Manager for the Creating Protective Environment for Access to Child Protection Services initiative across 12 districts of West Bengal in partnership with UNICEF. Her field experience includes working with organizations such as Missionaries of Charity and the Society for Indian Children’s Welfare, where she provided psychological counselling to children in need of care and protection, as well as children in conflict with the law.

Sreeja has also contributed significantly to academia as an educator at Vidyasagar School of Social Work, Vidyasagar University, where she taught graduate and postgraduate courses and served as Course Coordinator for the PG Diploma in Psychological Counselling. She has been actively involved in designing and delivering training programs for educators and mental health professionals as a senior academic consultant.

Trained in multiple evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including REBT, CBT, and SFBT, she integrates diverse modalities in her practice. She is currently associated with a leading mental health clinic in Kolkata as a psychologist and career counsellor. At Merak Institute, she plays a key role in strengthening clinical services, training initiatives, and holistic mental health interventions.

Somasree Basu

Somasree Basu is a psychologist, psychotherapist, and social development professional with extensive experience at the intersection of mental health, gender, environment, and child protection. As Director of Merak Institute, she brings a holistic, community-centered approach, integrating evidence-based therapy with inclusive and socially responsive program design. She is also a faculty at Vidyasagar University, for the PG Diploma in Counselling course.

With over a decade of experience, she has led initiatives in collaboration with organizations such as UNICEF, the World Bank, UNAOC, UNEP, and the Government of West Bengal. Her work spans psychological counselling, psychotherapy, and capacity building, with a focus on children, adolescents, women, and vulnerable populations. She has trained counsellors, educators, and frontline workers, and conducted workshops on emotional well-being, anxiety management, gender, and life skills among other relevant areas.

She has also worked in sports psychology with a premier football club, integrating mental health with performance and resilience. A recipient of the Intercultural Innovation Hub recognition globally in 2024-25 and WomenLeaders India Fellowship 2022-23, she is committed to advancing accessible, culturally relevant mental health care.

At Merak Institute, she leads with a vision of nurturing minds, building resilience, and enabling growth, ensuring empathetic, inclusive, and impactful support.
